The National Water Resources Board (NWRB), together with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and Maynilad Water Services Inc. (MWSI), recognized 21 water champions in the World Water Day Awards 2019.

Now on its fifth year, the event was graced by Cabinet Secretary Karlo Nograles who delivered a timely message considering the current water situation in Metro Manila and some of the areas in the country. “Simply put, the President wants all hands on deck to provide answers to the problems plaguing the water sector, and yesterday, I announced some of the short and long-term measures that will be adopted to address this pressing concern –one that is the consequence of decades of water utilization abuse, neglect and wastage,” Secretary Nograles stated.

Among the measures stated by the Secretary is the approval of the draft executive order strengthening NWRB. This measure is known to address one of the biggest problems being encountered in the sector which is fragmentation. Currently, more than 30 agencies are involved in water-related concerns.

Further, two draft bills on creating an apex body on water were endorsed during an inter-agency meeting in Malacañang for approval and submission to the Legislative Executive Development Advisory Council (LEDAC).

“Aside from these recommendations, there are other steps being considered to maximize our water resources,” the Secretary said referring to rainwater harvesting. He said that it is suggested for all government instrumentalities to immediately install rainwater harvesting facilities.

The Cabinet Secretary thanked the awarded water champions in supporting the government in the important journey towards the country’s water security.
