NWRB-LGU SIGNED MEMORANDUM OF AGREEMENT FOR ZAMBOANGA CITY GROUNDWATER RESOURCE MANAGEMENT PLAN AND MONITORING SYSTEM
May 11, 2018 – National Water Resources Board (NWRB) Executive Director Dr. Sevillo D. David Jr. and Zamboanga City Municipal Mayor Maria Isabelle Climaco-Salazar led the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) signing to signal the start of the Development of a Groundwater Management Plan for Zamboanga City and Surrounding Areas Project.
This project aims to monitor the groundwater of Zamboanga City by constructing monitoring wells with real-time capability to assess both the quality and quantity of groundwater. The wells will be equipped with pioneering locally-developed, cost-effective, real-time automated monitoring system capable of on-site data reading, recording, transmitting, and storing direct to a network. Once the monitoring wells are constructed, water level will be observed and the quantity of groundwater could be estimated. This breakthrough can assist in the improved water resources management through science-based decision making.
The entire project is divided into two (2) phases: Phase 1 focuses on preparing the vulnerability assessment, 3-Dimensional (3D) groundwater model and groundwater management plan; and Phase 2 takes on the construction of the monitoring wells, and its instrumentation in Zamboanga City together with wells in Iloilo City, Cagayan de Oro City and Metro Manila. Results of Phase 1 will be used to determine the location of the wells, and in the formulation of a groundwater management plan to protect Zamboanga City’s groundwater resources.
Also present as witnesses are DOST Sec. Fortunato T. Dela Peña, President Emmanuel V. Rubio of DOST- Philippine Council for Industry, Energy, and Emerging Technology Research and Development (PCIEERD), Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) led by Dr. Maria Aileen Leah G. Guzman as project collaborator and Fr. Karel S. San Juan, S.J of Ateneo de Zamboanga University. This project is the first collaboration of NWRB, ADMU and Ateneo de Zamboanga.
